Choosing Not to Smoke

Grade Level: 6
Subject: Reading, Health, Science 

Learning Outcomes:
Students will learn how peer pressure influences people to smoke.
Students will view tobacco ads and learn some of the tobacco industry's tricks of the trade.
Students will learn about Product Placement.
Students will determine how susceptible they are to the persuasion to smoke from outside forces.

Duration: Two Days (2 - 43 minute classes)

Materials:
oak tag or white construction paper for mini posters
tobacco ads
colored pencils
paper and pencil

Technology Tools and Courseware:
Computer
Projection Device
Tobacco Explorer CD
Internet Access

Teacher Notes:
The Tobacco Explorer is available through the WV Library Commission at 1-800-642-9021 ext. 8.
Collect samples of tobacco ads.
Acceptable use policy signed for all participating students.

Procedure:  Day 1 (43 minutes)
Discuss how peer pressure is a a major influence for young people to begin smoking.
In the Tobacco Explorer CD, view five Peer Pressure video clips of teens who describe why they began using tobacco. Use a projection device to display.
Then discuss how advertisement is also another major influence to get young people to begin smoking.
Hold up a tobacco ad and ask, "Is there anything wrong with this ad?"
Discuss the misconceptions the ad portrays.
Have students find a tobacco ad for tomorrow's lesson.

Procedure:  Day 2 (43 minutes)

Using the Tobacco Explorer and projection device, click on Media Influences and discuss how tobacco companies use Product Placement to persuade you to smoke.
Go to  Activities and Media Exercise and create an ad that shows how companies glamorize tobacco use.
Click on Peer Pressure Quiz.  Have students write down answers to determine how susceptible they are to persuasion from outside forces such as peer pressure, advertisement, and music videos.
Have students look at their tobacco ad and determine the misconceptions that their ad portrays.
Have students design a mini poster which displays what the ad should look like depicting "Why I shouldn't smoke".  This assignment will be due the next day.

Modifications:

Make required adjustments for students with special needs according to their IEP.

Enrichment:
  Discuss the price of tobacco use by doing the Tobacco Math activity on Tobacco.
  Discuss money they would save if they do not become addicted to tobacco.

Evaluation:
Students will receive 50 points for their tobacco ad and 50 points for their mini poster which should display ways to persuades the viewer not to smoke.
