Computer with Internet access and browser, database program
Procedures:

Students will complete online tutorial
lesson on database. (Hands on Exercises
with Access 97)

Students will set up database with
the following fields:

Location, date(s)
-
forces engaged
-
results
-
Commanders in charge
-
estimated casualties
-
interesting facts
-
Using these fields, students will conduct
research at multiple Internet sites and gather information on at least
10 battles that took place within the boundaries of present day WV. (WV
in the Civil War, Official
Records of the War of the Rebellion, and Battles
by States )

After researching, students will transfer
information to their databases.

Students will sort their databases
by different fields to reach the following conclusions:

Where in WV did the most
casualties occur?
-
What was the total number
of casualties state wide?
-
What county in WV was
the site of the most battles?
-
What battle lasted
the longest?
-
How many Union victories
were claimed in WV?
-
How many Confederate
victories were claimed in WV?
-
Who was the commander
who fought in the most battles in WV?
-
Students will locate the battle locations
on WV map.
Modifications:
After researching and completing given
fields, students can add additional fields or modify the existing database.
Handouts on blue paper for visually
impaired.
Cooperative pairing.

Enrichment Activities:
Take students on a field trip to Civil
War reenactment
Research other states in the North
or South in a similar manner to make comparisons
