To "Bee" or Not to "Bee"
SUBJECTS: Science, Health, and Math
LEARNER OUTCOMES: Students will discuss prior knowledge of honeybees and identify what they would like to learn. They will view an introductory PowerPoint presentation. Students will begin creating a honeybee portfolio that will be used throughout the five lessons.
TIME FRAME: 2 class periods, approximately 45 minutes each
MATERIALS: Student portfolios and outline
TECHNOLOGY TOOLS/COURSEWARE: Computers with Internet access (Teacher projection device and word processing programs are optional.)
TEACHER'S
NOTES: Each student must have an Acceptable Use Policy on file.
Caution the students that bees are wild animals that sting if they feel
threatened and they should not be approached carelessly.
This lesson is intended to be an introductory lesson. Body characteristics
of the honeybee will be explored. Later lessons will develop knowledge
on other topics. The portfolio will be used to tie the lessons all together.
The portfolio will include sections for: vocabulary, (including body
parts and characteristics), life cycles, domesticated hives, bee products,
and health issues concerning the honeybee. A possible outline and
vocabulary list for the portfolio contents are included in the activities
section of this lesson.
Subsequent lessons will allow time for the students to access Internet
sites dedicated to honeybees. Lesson five provides a question and
answer trivia challenge game.
PROCEDURES:
The teacher will introduce a unit on honeybees by showing the Honeybee
PowerPoint presentation Scientifically Speaking.
Students will be encouraged to take notes for use in their portfolios,
and to participate in the class discussion. Allow time for questions
and answers to motivate interest in honeybees.
Allot time to explain what should be included in the portfolio and a due
date.
SCIENCE/LANGUAGE ARTS ACTIVITY - This outline for the portfolio contents is intended to organize the student's knowledge of honeybees and improve their study skills.
MODIFICATIONS: The Honeybee PowerPoint can be modified by the teacher in terms of how detailed the discussion becomes. The portfolio can be adapted to different levels depending on different student abilities.
