                                                                      .
GRADE LEVELS:  5-6

SUBJECTS:  Science, Health, and Math

LEARNER OUTCOMES:  Through accessing sites on the Internet and gathering information, students will research the life cycle and daily existence of the honey bee, expanding their portfolios begun in Lesson 1.  Students will complete a wordsearch puzzle to assist in vocabulary retention.

TIME FRAME:  2 class periods, approximately 45 minutes each

MATERIALS: Student Portfolios, outline, dictionaries, encyclopedias, PowerPoint "Scientifically Speaking"

TECHNOLOGY TOOLS/COURSEWARE:  Computers with  Internet access, interactive encyclopedia.  (Teacher projection device and word processing programs are optional.)

TEACHER'S NOTES:  Each student must have an Acceptable Use Policy on file.  Caution the students. Bees are wild creatures that sting if they feel threatened, and should not be approached carelessly.

PROCEDURES:  The teacher will distribute vocabulary for students to enter into their portfolios.  Students will then search Bee Links on the Internet to define vocabulary words dealing with the life cycle of the honeybee.  Students may work in teams or individually.  Following are student friendly sites.  Additional information may be found in the World Book or other interactive encyclopedias.
Words and definitions are included for teachers and found on the
Vocabulary Guide.
Students may review PowerPoint presentation "Scientifically Speaking" used in
Lesson 1.

SCIENCE/LANGUAGE ARTS ACTIVITY:  This activity is intended to expand the organization of information in the portfolio, increasing student awareness of the routines and importance of the honeybee.

MODIFICATIONS:  Students may create a poster depicting different phases in the life of the honeybee.
Students may use some art form such as papermache, to design a model of the honeybee or the hive.
Students may create a "rap" or rhyme about the life cycle of the honeybee.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES:  Students may gather additional information from these books:  I Can Read About Bees and Wasps by David Eastman, 3-D Bees and Micro Fleas; See Insects Magnified up to 400,000 Times! by Levine, Humphrey, Johnstone, and Humphrey, The Bee Life Cycle by Sabrina Crewe.

EVALUATION:  Teachers may evaluate Lesson 2 by checking for completion of entries in the life cycle portion of the student portfolios.  Teachers may also distribute the word search Buzzing Around Puzzle.
