SUBJECTS: Science, Health, and Math

LEARNER OUTCOMES:  Through a class discussion and Internet research, students will become familiar with honeybee allergies and safety tips.  The students will create a Honeybee Safety poster using Powerpoint, Paint Program, or other relevant software.

TIME FRAME:  3 class periods, approximately 45 minutes each

TECHNOLOGY TOOLS/COURSEWARE:  Computers with Internet access and interactive encylopedia (Teacher projection device and word processing programs are optional.)  Access to  Microsoft Powerpoint,  Paint Programs, or other relevant software. ( If these are not available each student needs poster,colored pencils, and or crayons.)

TEACHER'S NOTES:  Each student must have an Acceptable Use Policy on file.
    Caution the students that bees can and will sting if they feel threatened, and they should not be approached carelessly.
    This lesson is intended to make the students familiar with honeybee allergies and safety tips.

PROCEDURES:  The teacher will distribute vocabulary for students to enter in their portfolios.  The students will search the Internet for definitions.  They may use an interactive or a traditional encyclopedia.  Students will be encouraged to take notes for use in their portfolio and to participate in the class discussion of allergies and safety tips.  Students should then create a poster about Honeybee Safety by using either Powerpoint, Paint Program or other relevant software.

HEALTH/LANGUAGE ARTS ACTIVITY:  The outline for the portfolio contents is intended to organize the student's knowledge of honeybees and improve their study skills.  The poster activity will demonstrate student understanding of honeybee health issues.

MODIFICATIONS: The vocabulary research can be modified by the teacher in terms of how many words need to be defined. The portfolio may be adapted to correspond with a student's IEP.

EVALUATION:  Teachers can evaluate this lesson by checking for completion of the allergy words in the vocabulary portion of the portfolio.  The teacher can evaluate the poster on the basis of accuracy of facts and presentation.  There is a premade quiz and answer key available for use as needed.
