What's All the Buzz About?
(A Game)

GRADE LEVELS: 5-6

SUBJECTS: Science, Health, and Math

LEARNER OUTCOMES:  Students will demonstrate their knowledge of honeybees by answering questions in a Jeopardy-style format.  This lesson is intended to be a wrap-up activity, pulling together all the information gathered in previous lessons.

TIME FRAME:  1 class period, approximately 45 minutes

MATERIALS:  PowerPoint game What's All the Buzz About?

TECHNOLOGY TOOLS/COURSEWARE:  Multimedia Computer (Teacher projection device is optional.)  Microsoft PowerPoint for playing the question and answer game.

TEACHER'S NOTES:  What's All the Buzz About? game questions and answers may be accessed and printed from the Teacher's Guide.

PROCEDURES: Choose two players or two teams (depending on class size).  A moderator is needed to read questions and judge correct answers.
1. Start the game by loading the Powerpoint What's all the Buzz About? Click on the first frame and then select the AV. screen icon at the bottom.  You will see five categories with number amounts.
2. Students/Teams take turns answering questions about honeybees to earn points.
3. Student/Team chooses a category and an amount.
4. Moderator clicks on the underlined number and reads the question.
5. Student/Team gives the answer. When the student/team answers, moderator clicks on blue screen (not blue icon on left). The answer will appear on the next screen.  Moderator awards points if the answer is correct. Click on the brown button at bottom right to return to the categories page.
6. Continue with next player.
The game ends when all questions are answered.  Highest score wins.
The game may be reset by repeating step 1.
 

SCIENCE/LANGUAGE ARTS ACTIVITY - This lesson pulls together all the information gathered in the four previous lessons, class discussions and research.  It is a fun and interactive way for students to demonstrate their knowledge of the honeybee and related topics.

MODIFICATIONS: The What's All the Buzz About game can be modified by the teacher in terms of rules of play and thoroughness of answers depending on the instructional levels of participating students.
Teacher may modify questions and answers by editing the PowerPoint game.
Teacher may ask questions orally using the Teacher's Guide provided.
 

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES:
Students may challenge parents to play the What's All the Buzz About game.
The teacher may invite local apiarists to visit the classroom.

EVALUATION:  Teachers may evaluate this lesson by assessing student answers to oral questions about the honeybee body characteristics, life cycle, beehives, health concerns, and miscellaneous information.  Teachers may use this activity as an informal assessment to identify areas of weakness in content knowledge.
