You may use a calculator to solve these problems.
1. If a queen honeybee lays 2000 eggs per day from March 1st to May
31st, how many eggs has she laid? She
laid 184,000 eggs.
2. If the old queen lays eggs for 16
future queens and 1/2 are killed by the new queen while still in their
cells, and 1/4 die while fighting the new queen, how many rival queens
has she killed?
She
killed 8 potential queens in their cells and 4 potential queens while fighting.
3a. If a hive has 51,000 workers when
the old queen leaves to find a new home, and she takes 1/3 of the workers
with her, how many workers fly away with the old queen?
17,000 workers will leave with the queen.
3b. How many workers are left to continue
in the old hive?
34,000
workers are left in the old hive.
3c. What fraction of the workers were
left behind?
2/3 of
the workers were left behind.
4. If a honeybee is flying at 25 mph,
how many minutes would it take her to travel 5 miles? It
will take 12 minutes to fly 5 miles.
5. Honeybees have 4 wings, 5 eyes and
6 legs. Tell how many wings, eyes and legs are on 250 honeybees.
250 honeybees would have 1,000 wings, 1250 eyes, and 1500 legs.
6. If a hive of 30,000 honeybees has
1 queen, 100 drones, and 29899 workers, give the percentage of bees in
the hive that are workers. 99.66% of
the bees in this hive are worker bees.
7. Using the information in question 6, change the percentage of worker bees into a fraction and then into decimal form. 99.66% = 99.66/100 = .9966
8. If 630 honeybees work in an apple
tree with 45,360 blossoms, and each bee visits the same number of blossoms
as her sisters, how many blossoms will each bee visit? Each
bee will visit 72 blossoms.
9a. A beekeeper moves his hives from orchard to orchard during the spring to help pollinate the fruit trees. If the keeper has 12 hives and leaves them for 2 weeks in each orchard, how many orchards can the hives pollinate in 6 weeks? The hives can pollinate 3 orchards in 6 weeks.
9b. If the beekeeper places the hives
in a peach orchard on April 5th, and leaves them to work for 2 weeks, on
what date will the keeper remove the hives?
The beekeeper will remove the hives on April
19th.
10. If honeybee foragers work from 5
AM to 8 PM on a warm summer day, how many hours can they work in 1 week?
Each honeybee forager will work for 105 hours
in a week.

Answer to the enrichment statement.***
We
also ran into the problem of different numbers from different "experts."
Our solution was to look at all the numbers, take an approximate middle
number, and then couch our statements with such words as "approximately",
"as long as", "as far as", or "between."
