Title: Chocolate, Chocolate, Read All About It
Grade Level: 7

Subject: Language Arts

Learner Outcomes: The students will be able to create a fictitious newspaper based on factual information on the history of chocolate.

Time Frame: 2 weeks

Materials: Microsoft Word or other publishing software

Technology Tools/Courseware: computers with Internet access, Office 97 or other software with word processing program and multimedia presentation package (Power Point)

Teacher Notes: The teacher will group the students in to groups of four. Each group will be assigned one of the following areas to complete for the newspaper:
1. Write a news article using factual information about chocolate.
2. Compose an editorial relating to chocolate.
3. Design a cartoon strip that highlights an important issue, event, or invention about chocolate.
4. Write a feature story either to entertain or inform the reader about chocolate.
5. Write a column or design a crossword puzzle concerning chocolate trivia.
6. Create the headline and byline for each article. Design the layout of the newspaper, determining the placement of each article. Choose the articles that have been written and will be included in the newspaper. Consider good journalism practices. Create an advertisement for a new chocolate product.

Procedures:

2. Each student in your group will compose an editorial relating to chocolate.

3. Each student in your group will design a cartoon strip that highlights an important issue, event, or invention about chocolate. 5. Each student in your group will write a column or design a puzzle concerning chocolate triviaHershey's Chronology,  Thinking Fountain, choc-full of facts with sweet trivia,  and Chocolate History at the Shopping Place are good sites with additional trivia facts.
6. Each student in your group will create an advertisement for a new chocolate product. Your group will work together to create the headline and byline for each article. You will also design the layout of the newspaper, determining the placement of each article. Your group will choose the articles that have been written and will be included in the newspaper. Remember to consider good journalism practices.

Modifications: Modifications will be made based on those listed in student's IEP.

Enrichment Activities: Prepare a newscast from the articles in the newspaper and video to present on the school network.
