Chocolate-Covered World
Title: Chocolate-Covered World
Grade Level: 7
Subject: Social Studies
Learner Outcomes: Students will find the cacao producing regions of the world and place them on a map of the world. They will investigate the process of producing cacao pods into beans and manufacturing chocolate products.
Time Frame: 5 days
Materials: map of the world, paper, staples, construction paper, and markers to make booklet
Technology Tools/Courseware: computers with Internet access, Office 97 or other software with word processing program and multimedia presentation package (Power Point)
Teacher Notes: Print a map of the world for each group of students. Have students find the cacao producing regions of the world and place them on the world map. Students will investigate the process of producing cacao pods into beans and manufacturing chocolate products. They will make journal entries of what they discovered. When they have completed their research, students will produce a booklet. The booklet will advertise the area of the world that grows cacao where they would like to visit. The booklet should make people want to visit this part of the world.
Procedures:
1. Find the cacao
producing regions of the world and place them on the world map
given to you by your teacher.
2. Investigate
the process of producing cacao pods into beans and manufacturing chocolate
products. The cocoa

3. When you have completed your research, produce a booklet.
The booklet will advertise the area of the world that grows cacao where
you would like to visit. The booklet should make people want to visit this
part of the world.
Things you might want to include in your book: A Brief
History, Location, Climate, Language Spoken, Natural Wonders/Sights, Special
Festivals, Museums/Cultural Sights, Prices, and What Items to Pack. Travel

Modifications: Modifications will be made based on those listed in student's IEP.
Enrichment Activities: Could you imagine a world without chocolate? Believe it or not, chocolate was almost not discovered in Europe. Develop a time line that depicts some of the events which brought us chocolate we know and love today.
