Lesson One:
Won-a-pa-lei's Journey on the Island

Learner Outcomes:

Students will read the novel, Island of
the Blue Dolphins.

Students will define vocabulary words in each chapter.

Students will be able to determine the meaning of a word by using context
clues.

Students will draw conclusions to make generalizations, judgements,
inferences, and to summarize and analyze information base on reading selections.

Students will write sentences that are complete and varied.
Duration of the lesson: 45-minute sessions per
day for six weeks

Blue Dolphins, dictionaries, and
worksheets

and Power Point
Teacher Notes:

This lesson plan is the foundation of the Island of the Blue Dolphin
unit. Therefore, implementation of this lesson will take approximately
four to six weeks.

The following worksheets are provided for this lesson: Comprehension
Questions for each chapter, Morning Activities, Spelling Test, Vocabulary,
and Unit Test

This unit will be introduced to the students by using a Power Point
presentation. In order to use the Power Point presentation, Mircosoft Power
Point is needed. The use of this Power Point is optional.
Procedures:
-
Activity #1 -The students will be introduced to the novel called Island
of the Blue Dolphins through a Power
Point presentation.

Activity #3 -The students will listen for pleasure to a chapter of the
story each day read to them by the teacher. A class discussion will follow.

Activity #6 -Each student will participate in constructing a class booklet
by illustrating and summarizing a chapter of the Island of the Blue
Dolphins.

Activity #8 -After summarizing each chapter, the student will follow
the book report guidelines to write a report on the novel, Island
of the Blue Dolphins. Book reports will be due at the end of the
unit during lesson five's culminating activity.
Modifications:
-
Exceptional students will listen as the teacher reads each chapter orally.
They then will be paired with another student to answer comprehension questions.

Students' lessons will be modified according to IEP specifications.
Enrichment Activities:
-
Students may portray and present to the class any of the major characters
in the story. Ex. Students may dress as the character and speak from his
or her point of view.
Evaluation/Assessment:
-
The teacher will grade and discuss comprehension questions, summaries,
morning activities, and vocabulary assignments.

Teacher will give a unit test and spelling test after every five chapters.
-
Students will demonstrate their understanding of the novel through their
creation of their class booklet and their book report.
