“Forest Fever”
Grade Level: 6
Subjects: Science, Social Studies, English,
and Art
Learner Outcomes:

Students will develop an understanding of the basic characteristics
of a forest.

Students will be able to locate the different types of forest that grow
in different parts of the world.

Students will be able to identify the parts of the forest structure.
-
Students will use the Internet and public library to research different
types of forest.
-
Students will use research information related to the different types
of forest to compose diamante poems.
-
Students will create 3-D pictures of the different types of forest.
Duration of the Lesson: Five 45-minute
lessons
Materials: Encyclopedias, library books,
and handouts
Technology Tools/Courseware: Internet
Teacher Notes:

Students will continue to work on comprehension question, summaries,
morning activities, and vocabulary assignments daily.

Students should have already been taught how to write diamante poems.

The teacher will assign a type of forest when working on the Forest
Research Project.

Modifications:

Exceptional students may require more time and possibly need a teacher’s
aide for assistance during the activity.

Student’s lessons will be modified according to their IEP specifications.
Enrichment Activity:

Students may participate in an outdoor classroom at a local forest.
Evaluation/ Assessment:

First, students will be evaluated on the following tests: “What is a
Forest,” "Types of Forest", and "Structure of the Forest".

Secondly, students will be evaluated on the quality of their Forest
Research Project.

Thirdly, students will be evaluated on their diamante poems.
-
Finally, students will be evaluated on their participation and creation
of their 3-D forest art project.
