Procedure:

1.  The students will read and discuss the background information on Forest Conservation.
     Refer to the following pages to introduce and discuss lesson: p. 10, p. 16, pp. 33-35,
     p. 42, p. 47-48, p. 56, p. 76, p.88, p. 90, p. 99, p.112, p. 124, pp. 138-139, p. 140-141

2.  The students will answer the Forest Conservation Comprehension Study worksheets in
     cooperative learning  groups and discuss their answers with the class.

3.  The students will create a poster showing how forests are necessary for human life and
     give an oral presentation  on their illustration.

4.  The students will take the Forest Conservation Check-up Test.

5.  The students will read and discuss the  information on the Forest's Worst Enemy
     (Forest Fires).

6.  The students will listen to a presentation by a local conservation officer or a state
     forester on open burning laws and forest fire prevention.  A question and answer period
     will follow the presentation.

7.  The students will answer the Forest's Worst Enemy Comprehension Study worksheets
      in cooperative learning groups and discuss their answers with the class.

8.  The students will take the Forest's Worst Enemy Check-up Test.

9.  The students will read and discuss the background information on Forest Benefits.

10.  The students will make a leaf collection booklet that includes the scientific and
       common name of fifteen leaves.

11.  The students will answer the Forest Benefits Comprehension Study worksheets in
       cooperative learning groupsand discuss their answers with the class.

12.  The students will take the Forest Benefits Check-up Test.

13.  The class will discuss how forest conservation was explained in the novel,  My Side of
       the Mountain.

14.  Students will answerSam's Mountain Comprehension Study worksheets in
       cooperative learning groups and discuss their answers with the class.

15.  The students will takeSam's Mountain Check-up Test.

16.  The class will plant a tree in the school yard in honor of the "Sam" in all of us.

17.  The students will write a sequel to My Side of the Mountain and read their story to
       the class.
