Gogh.

The students will link Van Gogh's paintings to specific periods
of his life.

Duration of Lesson: 60-90 minutes
Materials: Paper, brushes, tempera or acrylic
paint, paper plates, paper towels, containers of water

Be sure to read and discuss the information on this site.
Click on the individual paintings to maximize their size. Have the
students note the colors and the brush strokes.

Gather brushes of various sizes.
Procedures:
-
Using the data projector, lead the children through a tour
of the Van Gogh gallery.
-
Explain to the class that they are going to be experimenting
to see if they can generate various textures with paint by using brushes
of different sizes, by varying the thicknesses of paint, by trying a variety
of brush stroke techniques, etc. Tell them that as part of their
experimentation, they should try to make some brush strokes similar to
those of Van Gogh.

Divide the class into groups of four. Provide each
group with paper, paint, water, paper towels, paper plates, and a variety
of brushes. Allow them time to experiment.

Do a "walk-around" so that the students can view one another's
work. Point out good examples of Van Gogh's style.

Using the data projector, project "The Starry Night".

Give the students a clean sheet of paper and instruct them
to copy this work. Encourage them as they paint.
Modifications:

Consider special needs students when the groups are assigned.

Use fingerpaints with visually impaired students.
Enrichment Activities:

Allow students to visit other art galleries noticing color
and brush techniques.
Evaluation/Assessment:

Observe student involvement as they view the gallery.

Note appropriate participation as they experiment with paint.

Informally discuss with students how closely their picture
resembles Van Gogh's.
