Title:  Bill of Rights

Grade Level:  5,  6

 Subjects:  Social Studies

Learner Outcomes:
    1.   Students will know what personal freedoms are guaranteed them by the Bill of Rights.

Duration of Lesson:  Part A:  as needed by individual students
                               Part  B:  one class period

Materials:  cards numbered 1 - 10 for each team

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Internet

Procedures:

    1.  (Part A)  Students will use textbook or Bill of Rights web site to see an explanation of  the provisions of the Bill of Rights.

    2.  After students have had a chance to become familiar with the Bill of Rights, divide the class into two teams.  Give each team a set of cards, numbered 1 - 10 for each number in the Bill of Rights.

    3.  One at a time in random order, read a phrase listed below.  Give teams time to discuss their answers, then have each team captain hold up the amendment number her team has chosen.  Award a point for each correct answer.

Phrases are listed below with the amendment number in parentheses.

May worship as we please (1)
Freedom of the press (1)
May gather peaceably (1)
May speak openly about what we think and feel (1)
Cannot be punished for religious beliefs (1)
May keep guns (2)
Soldiers cannot be placed in citizens’ homes during peacetime (3)
No unreasonable searches (4)
Police need warrants (4)
Cannot be tried twice for the same crime (5)
Freedom from testifying against oneself (5)
Trial by jury (5)
Entitled to a speedy trial (6)
Right to have a lawyer (6)
Right to have witnesses to testify in your defense (6)
Laws must be followed in noncriminal trials (7)
Innocent until proven guilty (8)
Prevents that bail be too high (8)
Forbids unfair fines (8)
Forbids cruel and unusual punishment (8)
States and people have additional rights (9)
Federal government only has the powers given to it in the Constitution (10)
