Title: Origin of Military Branches
Grade Level: 6-8
Subjects: Social Studies, Language Arts
Learner Outcomes: Students will be given
the opportunity to:
-
Research a branch of the military
-
Create a Data Retrieval Chart
-
Present information orally to the class
Duration of Lesson: (3) 45 minute periods
Materials:
-
overhead transparencies and pens
-
Data Retrieval Chart
form
-
large butcher paper and markers (optional)
Technology Tools/Courseware:
-
computers with Internet access
-
overhead projector
Teacher Notes:
Prior to the lesson, students should
brainstorm additional categories for the Data Retrieval Chart themselves.
The option to complete a 'Military Tidbits' paper
during the lesson should also be discussed with the students before they
begin their research (see enrichment activities).
Procedures:
-
Teacher will divide the class into five groups:
each group will represent one military branch (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines,
Coast Guard). Suggestion: Each group can be randomly assigned by counting
off in 5's, choosing the name of the branch out of a hat, choosing a representative
item from a bag (boat, airplane, etc.), or student preference.
-
Students will research their assigned branch
on the Internet. Suggested sites include:
Army
Navy
Air
Force Marines
Coast Guard
-
Students will fill out their section of the
Data Retrieval Chart as they research the
information.
-
Each student group will present its information
using transparencies on the overhead projector. As presentations are being
made, the class will fill out that section on their personal Data Retrieval
Charts. Students can make a large classroom chart on butcher paper
for display (optional).
Modifications: Blue paper and enlarged font
can be used on the chart for visually impaired students. The option of
making a large classroom chart gives slower students the opportunity to
get all the information. Modify assignment based on students' IEP and utilization
of support staff when appropriate.
Enrichment Activities:
-
Students can complete a 'Military
Tidbits' paper, which lists any interesting trivia and unusual facts
they find while conducting their research. Extra credit can be given.
-
Students can create a collage representing their
branch of the military.
Evaluation/Assessment:
-
Successful completion of Data Retrieval Chart
-
Group presentation to the class
