Grade Level: 6-8
Subjects: Social Studies, Language Arts
Learner Outcomes: Students will be given
the opportunity to:

using the Internet
-
Research the military academies
-
Outline research information
-
Create a recruitment video for a specific branch
Duration of Lesson: (3) 45 minute periods
Materials:
Technology Tools/Courseware:
Teacher Notes:
Review outlining techniques with
the students prior to the lesson. Contact ROTC or local recruitment offices
for classroom speakers.
Procedures:
-
A representative from each branch of the military
will present a short informative talk.
-
Teacher will divide the class into five groups:
each group will represent one military branch (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines,
Coast Guard).
-
Each group will research on the Internet (see
references) the military academy, special forces and career opportunities
of its branch.
-
Using the word processor, students will outline
the information found. As a review, the students could use the Microsoft
Word 97 Tutorial: Create an Outline.
-
Using the outline as a resource, students will
produce their own recruitment video.
Modifications:
Modifications should be based on the student's
IEP and utilization of support staff when necessary. Blue paper and large
fonts will help visually impaired students.
Enrichment Activities:
-
Students will create a tri-fold pamphlet for
their branch.
-
Students will help plan "Military Day".
Tables will be set up with a military branch at each table. Students from
different classes will visit each table. Student presenters ( in appropriate
military dress) will explain their branch, show the video, pass out pamphlets
and persuade students to sign up. Since students can only sign up for 1
service, there will be competition as to which branch recruits the most.
-
Students could participate in a 'modified' military
physical fitness test.
Evaluation/Assessment:
-
