SAFETY FIRST/RESEARCH TECHNIQUES


Lesson Three:  E-mail Safety 

Title:  E-mail Safety

Grade Level:  12 (Unit may be adapted to any class using computer lab online activities.)

Subject Areas:  Business and Language Arts

Learner Outcomes:  The student will acquire knowledge of and identify safe and proper methods for accessing E-mail accounts.

Time Frame:  Three 45 Minute Class Periods

Materials:  Access to an Internet Accessible Computer Lab, E-mail Safety Guidelines PowerPoint Presentation, E-mail Account Setup at the assigned Internet site, E-mail Terms Word Puzzle, Computer Safety Rules and Procedures Acknowledgment Form, and E-mail addresses of students from other schools both in-state and out of state (The teacher will need to contact other schools and their teachers to obtain these addresses as well as permission for participation in the activity.)

Technology Tools/Courseware: Internet-Ready Computer Lab, Computer Projection Device, Expert Software Crosswords & Word Games (Puzzle Maker Software), Printer, and Microsoft PowerPoint Software

Teacher Notes:  Contact and/or locate various schools through listserve sources, Internet searches, and/or personal contacts that will be willing to participate in the "Cross-country E-mail Campaign" and review the correct formatting procedure for letter writing to correct student's correspondence before it is submitted.

Procedures:
  Project Section 1

  1. The student will gain knowledge of properly and safely creating, accessing, and using an electronic mail account.
  2. The teacher will use a PowerPoint presentation to demonstrate the procedures for creating, accessing, and using an electronic mail account.  A transcript of related information will accompany the PowerPoint presentation.
  3. The student will access a free electronic mail service to obtain an E-mail account.
  4. The student will be guided throughout the Internet service's E-mail setup program through on-screen instructions and teacher assistance.  Once the account is set up, the student will gain knowledge of rules governing the proper and safe usage of E-mail accounts through referencing the Updated Yahoo! Terms of Service which are presented to all new E-mail account holders..
   Project Section 2
  1. The student will gain knowledge of and discuss the advantages and/or disadvantages of electronic mail accounts.
  2. The student will be required to compose a letter which describes him/herself in terms of school, family, and interests  (See Project Section 3 for continuation).
     Project Section 3
  1. Each student will be assigned an E-mail address of a student from another school to whom he/she may address the letter that was composed in the previous section.
  2. The student will be required to submit a handwritten copy of the letter prior to sending it, as well as submitting a carbon copy (on the E-mail account program) to the teacher when sending the letter.
  3. The student will then be responsible for giving a brief report of the information gained from the correspondence that he/she receives.
  4. Student will complete the E-mail Terms Word Puzzle.
  5. Computer Lab Safety Rules and Procedures handout will be reviewed and signed by student upon completion of Lessons 1-3 of the Safety First/Research Techniques Unit.
Modifications:
  1. The teacher should determine the need for student assistance based on inclusion and request a special education teacher and/or aide be present during lesson instruction & activities.
  2. The teacher may also use peer tutoring and/or small group work during the PowerPoint presentation.
Enrichment Activities:  Cross-country E-mail Campaign, Reference of the Updated Yahoo! Terms of Service during E-mail account setup process, and PowerPoint Presentation on E-mail Safety

Evaluation/Assessment:  Class Participation, Teacher Observation, Completion of E-mail Terms Word Puzzle, and Report of Results of Cross-country E-mail Campaign
