Students will explore various types of fossil formations.
Students will analyze and interpret data.
Students will make and keep an electronic journal.
Students will display data in a chart, table, graph, or power point presentation.
Students will prepare a written summary or report of the results of the investigation.
Duration of Lesson:  2-3 (45 min. class periods)

Materials:  pencil, paper, floppy disk, directions for making a journal, a list of site(s), Plant Fossils of West Virginia/Scavenger Hunt Worksheet and answer key. (Note that these are large files and may take a while to download)

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Multimedia computer with internet access, word processing program, data projector,  printer.

Teacher Notes:

Use the power point presentation as an introduction to this activity prior to students going to the lab.
All students should have on file a current Internet permission form/acceptable use policy.
This lesson requires the use of a computer lab.
Teachers need to create a folder for electronic journal entries or provide a floppy disk for each
Provide students who are not able to use the Internet with some addresses or phone numbers.

Note: You will need to type in the URL address not the key words to go directly to the site.
Students may be grouped and assigned one site to complete the information.

Procedure:
Provide students with the url sight (http://www.geocraft.com/WVFossils/TreeFerns.html) and the scavenger hunt worksheet.
Pair students with a partner.
Each student must search a sight for the answer to one of the questions. The other student will write the answer. Then switch positions and start the process all over again until all questions have been answered.
Each team then must write up a summary of their findings and turn in both the worksheet and the data disk of their summary.

Modifications:

Students who do not have internet approval will use an encyclopedia on CD-ROM to research fossils.
Special needs students will work cooperatively with a partner.
