Read several legends together as
a class.

Use the Story
Matrix to discuss and analyze the legends.

Brainstorm as a class different
animals that could be incorporated into a legend and list various “Why”
questions that could be addressed. Ex.: Why Butterfly
Wings are Different Colors, Why Bears Have Short Tails, Why Raccoons Wear
a Mask?, Why owls Hunt at Night, etc.

Look at several legends written
by second graders at Germantown
Academy.

Write a “Why” animal legend and use a
copy of the Story Matrix to motivate students
to add more details.

Allow students to use a word processor
for their final copy.

Share the legends orally with the
class.
Modifications:

Partner strong and struggling writers

Allow students to record their legend
orally on a tape player.
