Lesson #1: Getting Ready

Grades 2-4

Subjects: Language Arts, Physical Education

Learner Outcomes:
   1. Students will demonstrate the proper way to prepare for physical activity.
   2. Students will self evaluate personal lifestyles.
   3. Students will use traditional and electronic strategies to express themselves in written journals.

Time: 35 to 45 minutes

Materials: Journals, Lifestyle Survey

Technology Tools/Courseware: computers with internet access, word processor, and printer.

Teacher Notes: The purpose of these activities are:

Be sure that students have arms crossed across their chest hands on shoulders not behind their head as this could lead to straining neck muscles.

Procedures:

    1. Jog 3 laps around the gym and line up
    2. Demonstrate the following stretches stressing to move slowly and hold for 4-5 seconds DO NOT BOUNCE!
            a. SUN STRETCH
            b. PIKE STRETCH
            c. LEG V
            d. MODIFIED HURDLER
            e. TRUNK TWIST
            f. ABDOMINAL CRUNCHES (10) [this activity is to build abdominal strength not flexibility]
            g. FIRE UPS (10) [modified push ups again for strength not flexibility]
            h. THIGH STRETCH
            i. HAMSTRING STRETCH
Stress no bouncing, nice long stretches. We will do these everyday before class. They will take us 5-10 minutes to complete. Stress that proper stretching gets the body ready to be active and lessens the chance of injury. III. Play the Tip of the Day from Dr. Cooper.

Modifications:  Follow IEP's and 504 Plans where applicable.

Enrichment Activities:   Students to practice using proper stretching techniques at home with parents.
                                    Students to continue practice of proper stretching in future Physical Education
                                    classes.

Evaluation/Assessment:  Participation and demonstration of proper technique.
                                    Completion of Journals.
