Title: Lesson # 2 ALL ABOUT ME: MEASURING HEIGHT AND WEIGHT

Grade Level(s): 2-4

Subjects: Math, English/Language Arts, Physical Education

Learner Outcomes:
Students will compute height ( in feet and inches ) and weight ( in pounds ) using tape measures and bathroom scales.

Students will follow directions in recording their weight and height on Individual Response Forms for Body Mass Index.

Students will estimate the percentage of their day spent sitting  in contrast to the percentage of their
day spent moving around, then graph out the results for comparison using computer spreadsheets.

Duration of Lesson:
By assigning students to pairs or triads for measuring height, then teaming with another pair or triad to measure weight, the entire class should be able to finish measuring and recording their data in 30 minutes. A discussion of their daily activities
to determine amount of time spent "sitting" versus the amount of time spent "moving around" requires another 15 minutes.
The actual graphing of the SITTING/MOVING CHART requires at least 30 minutes and may be scheduled for another
day or session.

Materials:

Technology Tools/ Courseware:
Enough computers available for each student to use a spreadsheet to create a personal compare/contrast chart.
    Internet accessibility for links
Teacher Notes: Procedures:
1. Divide the class into pairs or triads.
2. Pass out the tape measures and model the procedure for measuring a student's height.
3. Distribute the Individual Response Form and explain to the students how to record their heights under the proper column.
4. Teachers should closely monitor the measuring of each student and double check any measurements which look peculiar.
5. After measuring height, combine 2 groups together to take turns standing on the scales to measure weight.
6. Monitor the recording of their weight into the proper column on the Individual Response Form and collect the forms
record data onto the Class Response Form for each teacher.
7. The next day (or session ), the teacher engages the students in the activity to estimate the percentage of the student's day is
spent sitting or resting versus standing or moving around.
8. The students need to record their estimates into a computer spreadsheet program to compare/contrast or go to web site wwwhealthstatus.com.to assist with calculating the BMI.
9. Each student will print out their SITTING/MOVING CHART and respond to their findings in their daily journals.
Ask the students to predict how much their chart would differ if they made one for Saturday? Sunday? Summer Vacation?

Modifications:
Use cooperative grouping and individual teacher assistance where needed to help challenged students ( according to guidelines
given in students' IEPs and 504 plans ).

Enrichment Activities:
Students can collect data for the SITTING/MOVING CHART for Saturday and Sunday and compare with the one done during the school day. Also, the older, advanced students can use a calculator to find the mean, mode and range of data collected during health investigations.
Evaluation/Assessment:
Response forms will be collected and checked for completion and accuracy.
The SITTING/MOVING CHART will be graphed and graded for the following criteria:
                            Following Directions
                            Completeness
                            Accuracy
Application of High Order Thinking Skills
Mastery of spreadsheet for creating simple compare/contrast graphs
