Title: Lesson #4 Calculating Body Mass Index (BMI )

Duration of Lesson:
    The lesson could be broken into three parts:
 
 Part 1: Calculate/ Graph Body Mass Index (BMI)          45 minutes to 1 hour
 Part 2: Magic Square Activity           30 - 40 minutes
 Part 3: Journal Activity           10-15 minutes

Materials:
    Computer with Internet Access and printer
    Data of student's weight and height
    Magic Square Activity Worksheet
    Daily Journal ( Traditional or Electronic )

Technology Tools/ Courseware:
    Computer(s) with Internet-access to links
    Word Processor

   Calculate/Graph BMI  Magic Square Activity  Journal Response
1. Access http://healthstatus.com/bmi.htm      to calculate Body Mass Index using height and weight data collected from Lesson #2.

2. Use spreadsheet program like Excel to
graph out BMI.

 

1. Distribute copies of Health Magic 
    Squares for each student.
2. Match the Health/Fitness terms to
    complete each sentence.
3. Record the number of the term in the
    proper box.
4. Use calculators as accessories with
    computers to tally each column of 
    the magic square to total the sum 
    of 34.
5. Self-check work to determine if the 
answers add up to 34 correctly.
STUDENTS:
Respond in Daily Journals by examining personal BMI calculations. Express feelings and or concerns about the findings. How accurate do you believe the findings are in predicting how healthy a person is? Why do you think it is important to respect each other's privacy when talking about height and weight?

Modifications:
Use pair buddies and/or cooperative learning groups to assist with the reading and addition of sums in the Magic Square
Activity for challenged students according to the specifications of IEPs and 504 plans.

Enrichment Activities:
Continue Journalizing throughout the year to express feelings/concerns about social, emotional, and physical health and well being.

Evaluation/Assessment:
Teacher will closely monitor the graphing of the BMI electronically and use the observations in the assessments of the activity.
The Health Magic Square is a self-test activity that must add up to the sum of 34 correctly.
