HARD HEADED???
A Lesson on Helmet Safety


 

Grade Level(s):  6-8

Subject(s):  Health, Language Arts and Technology

Learner Outcomes:
Students will use the Internet site to search for answers to questions about bicycle helmets.
Students will recognize the benefits of wearing safety helmets when riding bicycles.
Students will design a safety helmet for an egg.

Duration of Lesson:  4 Lessons (45 minutes each)

Materials:  paper, pencil, Bicycle Helmet Quiz for each student, Egg Drop Helmet Information Sheet for each team, Egg Drop Activity sheet for each team, egg for each team, materials to wrap around eggs (see teacher notes for examples), masking tape

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Computer for each student, Internet Access, Microsoft Word

Teacher Notes:
Students and teacher must have skill in using Microsoft Word (Version 97 or above).
Preprint a hard copy of Bicycle Helmet Quiz.  Make a copy for each student.
Preprint a hard copy of information from the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute for students that do not have acceptable use policy.
Preprint answer sheet to Bicycle Helmet Safety Quiz.
Preprint the Egg Drop Helmet Information Sheet for each team.
Preprint the Egg Drop Activity sheet for each team.
The teacher may want to ask staff/students to bring in materials for egg drop.  Examples:  paper towels, toilet paper, tissues, cloth, styrofoam, plastic, nylon hose, etc.

Procedures:
Day 1
1.  Hand-out quiz to students.  Read through quiz orally as a group before doing independent work.
2.  Students will go to Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute site and read information to answer questions on quiz.
3.  Students will write answers on worksheet.
4.  Collect quiz at the end of period and check before next class.

Day 2
1.  Return quiz and discuss questions and answers orally.
2.  Discuss WV Law on Helmets for children and helmet standards.
3.  Introduce the Egg Drop Helmet Information using guidelines on information sheet.

Day 3
1.  Students will work in pairs to create a safety "helmet" for an egg.  Materials will include items that the teacher has available.
2.  Students will be given twenty minutes to design a helmet following guidelines listed on the Egg Drop Helmet Information sheet.
3.  Hand-out Egg Drop Activity sheet to students.
4.  Student will complete team names and material used before each egg is dropped.
5.  The teacher or designee will drop each egg from a designated height (recommend 7 - 10 feet). 
6.  Students will record data on the Egg Drop Activity sheet.

Day 4
1.  The students will write a paragraph, using Microsoft Word, about the type of material they chose for their "helmet" and why.
2.  The students will write a second paragraph, using Microsoft Word, about the results of their egg drop and the success of their chosen material.
3.  The students will write a third paragraph, using Microsoft Word, describing which materials provided the safest helmet for the egg and why.

Modifications:

Consult student IEP/504 plans for required individual modifications.

Enrichment Activities:

Develop a helmet survey and administer to the student body.
Use Microsoft Excel to graph and display results.
Give oral reports on the design and end result of the team's "helmet project".
Organize a bicycle/skateboard/scooter safety rodeo for the student body.
