GET IN THE GROOVE AND MOVE

Grade Levels:  3-4

Learner Outcomes:
Students will develop a weekly physical fitness plan.
Students will maintain a daily, year-long  journal of physical activities.

Duration of Lesson:  1 week/40 minutes per day; year-long  journal.

Teacher Notes:
Secure access to computer lab
Make sure each student has an Acceptable Use Policy on file
May have to download plug-in at Health Hunt Game

Procedures:

  1. Use the LCD projector from teacher's computer to visit the web site on Kids Health .  Read and discuss the information to present students with facts about the importance of good physical fitness and ideas for their own fitness activities.
  2. Show PowerPoint to introduce making an exercise plan.
  3. In computer lab, using Microsoft Word, have students plan a realistic physical activity for each day of the week.  The format would be list form with the day of the week in all caps and the activity separated with a hyphen. This fitness list can include structured and nonstructured games, sports, and activities.
  4. Teacher will complete rubric on computer use for each student.
  5. Students will begin a journal in a spiral notebook to record their daily physical activities in both words and drawings.
  6. Teacher will complete rubric for journal work on a bi-weekly basis during the first six weeks, then monthly thereafter.
  7. On a bi-weekly basis a class discussion will be scheduled to report personal progress.  If plans need changed, brainstorming for new ideas can be included.
  8. In computer lab have students play the  Health Hunt Game.  Click on "enter kids"; click on "Health Hunt"; follow screen directions to play the game.
Modifications:

Provide peer tutoring for children who need help
Provide large screen monitor for visually impaired students
