Learner Outcomes:
Students will study the circulatory system and know how it works.
Students will research information on the internet.

Duration of Lesson:  3 days/40 minutes per day

Materials:
1 empty cardboard paper towel tube per 2 students
"Circulatory System" word search- 1 copy per student
Clock with a second hand
Pencils

Technology Tools/Courseware:
Internet accessible computer lab

Teacher Notes:
Secure access to computer lab.
Make sure each student has an Acceptable Use Policy on file.
Have students save cardboard tubes well in advance of activity.
Print copies of  "Circulatory System" word search for each student.
Teacher should preview "Heartbeat" experiment before conducting.

Procedures:

  1. Students will go to the Hillendale site and click on "Circulatory".  The class will read and discuss the content items; the Amazing Facts; the diagrams of the heart, veins, and arteries.  Click on "Fantastic Fun Facts" and discuss.    Students can assess their newfound knowledge by playing the Match Game.  This activity is checked by the students online.
  2. Students will go to "Heartbeat" to read directions for conducting the experiment using the cardboard tubes as stethoscopes.  Students will work in pairs to complete the heartbeat experiment.  This activity will be evaluated by teacher observation and class discussion.
  3. Students can research the history of the stethoscope during computer lab time.
  4. Distribute the teacher prepared "Circulatory System" word search and have students complete independently.
  5. At the end of the lesson the students will complete a self-evaluation rubric.
Modifications:
Consult 504/IEP Student Plans
Provide peer tutoring for children who need help
Provide large screen monitor for visually impaired students

Enrichment Activities:
Share the book The Magic School Bus:  Inside the Human Body by Joanna Cole.
The students will visit the Indiana Marion County Public Library and the Heart Preview Gallery online to read related articles about the circulatory system.
