What's Up Doc?

Grade Level: Third

Subjects: Language Arts

Learner Outcomes:
Students will gather information about what it is like to be a doctor by interviewing a physician.
Students will record the interview for the purpose of creating a newspaper article.
Students will write the article, using the writing process, and publish the article in the school newspaper.  If there is no school newspaper, students could create a special edition, or begin a regular publication of their own.
Students can submit published articles to their local paper for reprinting.
Students will utilize technology by going online, using a digital camera, and by using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, or Compass Learning Writing Center to publish the newspaper articles.
Duration of Lesson: 
The interview should take fifteen to thirty minutes to complete. 
The article can be written, edited, and published in a total time of two to three hours.
Materials:
Cassette tape
Paper
Pencils
Dry erase board
Dry erase markers
Reporting Rubric
Technology tools/Courseware: 
Computer for every student
Microsoft Word
Microsoft Publisher
Printer
Digital camera
Tape recorders
Overhead projector

Teacher Notes:
Students should be familiar with the writing process, which consists of prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
Make certain that each student has a school/county Acceptable Use Policy on file.
Students should have prior knowledge of Microsoft Word.

Procedures:
 1.  The teacher will secure the cooperation of a local doctor(s) to be interviewed, setting up a time for the classroom visit.
 2.  The teacher will use the overhead projector to record brainstorming questions the students would like to ask. 
 3.  Students will type their questions.
 4.  Students will print their questions.  Each student will have a copy of all the questions.
 5.  Students use cassette tape recorders to record the interview(s). 
 6.  Students will take photos with the digital camera during the interview(s).
 7.  Interview(s) are shared with the entire class.
 8.  Students will go online to view a fourth grade newspaper.
 9.  The teacher reviews the writing process with the students.
10. Time is allotted for the writing: 10 minutes for prewriting, 45 minutes for drafting first copy, 45 minutes for revising and editing, and 60 minutes for publishing.  The publishing of the interview should be done in the appropriate form, using Compass Learning Writing Center or other word processing programs.
11.  Students will load the pictures from the digital camera and select the ones to become part of the article.
12.  If there is a school newspaper, the students can submit the completed article in the appropriate form.  If there is no school newspaper, create one. 13.  You could create a special edition or consider creating one for regular publication as part of your Language Arts lessons.
14.  Published articles should be shared with the class and displayed in the school. 
15.  Published articles could be submitted to a local newspaper for reprinting.
Modifications:
Follow instructions per Individualized Education Plan or 504 Plan.
Enrichment Activities:
Students can record interviews of one another, faculty members, and family members for listening at the listening center.
Students can use the data processing program for printing original work.
Students can submit other articles for publication.
Evaluation/Assessment:
The evaluation will be based on the Reporting Rubric.
