Begin the lesson by asking students: "Have you ever choked or have you ever seen someone else choking?". Have a brief discussion.. 2. Explain to students that they will learn the universal sign to show others that they are choking. 3. The teacher will model the universal choking sign by crossing arms and grasping the throat with both hands. 4. Have each student practice demonstrating the sign. The teacher will make sure each child can correctly demonstrate the sign. 5. Discuss with the students that if they are choking, an adult may perform the Heimlich maneuver. It is important for the teacher to explain this so the child won't be scared if an adult performs this procedure while they are choking. Emphasize that only people who have been trained should perform the Heimlich maneuver. 6. Explain to students that there are two methods in which they can save themselves from choking if they are alone. 7. The teacher will go to the web site, "When It's Just You In An Emergency" to view information about how kids can help themselves in emergency situations when they are alone. Students will view this information via the data projector. Teacher and students will have a class discussion on the topics found on this site. 8. The teacher will model the two methods for performing the self-Heimlich maneuver. Method 1- Make a fist and place it above your navel. Grab your fist with your other hand. Pull your hands up with a quick hard thrust. Method 2- Keep your hands on your belly, lean your body over the back of a chair, desk, or counter and shove your fist in and up.9. Have the students practice both models on themselves. 10. The teacher will have each student demonstrate the two models to check for mastery. Day 2
