Procedures:
Day 1

Using projection device/internet site First
Americans read about and discuss community and culture.

Show the map of the United States with tribal names labeled
in each region.

Divide class into groups of 4 and have them choose a tribe/area
to research.

Model for class how to take notes using chart paper in the
area of shelter
-
Search the internet to find sites about tribe.
-
Each member of the group chooses an area of Native American
life, clothing, shelter, transportation, beliefs to research.
-
Students will take notes for assigned area.
Day 2:

Share notes in groups

Write a short report using a word processing program

Illustrate report
-
Give a group presentation of tribe
Modifications:

Use children's encyclopedia for research

Teacher chooses research article based on reader's level

Work in pairs (strong and slower reader)

Assign roles for reader and illustrator
