Title:  Blanket Patterns

Grade Level: 3

Learner Outcomes:
   The student will be able to:

  •  state activities used by Native Americans and compare them to those of today
  •  state patterns and pattern parts seen in blankets worn by Native American
  •  design a pattern blanket with at least one line of symmetry
Duration of Lesson: 1 hour

Materials:

Technology Tools / Courseware:
  •  Shape Up software, or other draw program
  •  Color printer
  •  Multimedia computer
Teacher Notes:
  •  Familiarize students with the term symmetry.
  •  Show students how to fold paper to create line of symmetry.
  •  Make sets of 24 pattern blocks for each pair of students.
Procedures:
  •   Read Ten Little Rabbits by Virginia Grossman to students showing the illustrations
  •   On chart paper make a T-Chart labeling one side Native American Ways Long Ago and the other side Modern Ways.
  •   Have students brainstorm Native Americans ways shown in the book and state how they are different in Modern Day.
  •   At the end of the book study the blanket designs, share the summary of each tribe and matching blanket.
  •   Discuss how the blanket matches where the tribe lives with the colors that are used.
  •   Find the line of symmetry on each blanket (some may have more than one).
  •   Working in pairs have students design a blanket design with pattern blocks.
  •   Have students determine the line of symmetry.
  •   Introduce the software Shape Up.
  •   Have students make a design for a blanket using warm or cool colors and with a line of symmetry.
  •   Print each student's work.
Modifications:
  •   Trace pattern blocks after making design, color each piece
  •   Use graph paper to make design
Enrichment Activities: Evaluation / Assessment:
  •  Students will add their printed copy to their portfolio.
