Title: Blanket Patterns

Teacher Notes:

Familiarize students with the term symmetry.

Show students how to fold paper to create line of symmetry.
-
Make sets of 24 pattern blocks for each pair of students.
Procedures:
- Read Ten
Little Rabbits by Virginia Grossman to students showing the illustrations
-
On chart paper make a T-Chart
labeling one side Native American Ways Long Ago and the other side Modern
Ways.
-
Have students brainstorm Native Americans ways shown
in the book and state how they are different in Modern Day.
-
At the end of the book study the blanket designs,
share the summary of each tribe and matching blanket.
-
Discuss how the blanket matches where the tribe lives
with the colors that are used.
-
Find the line of symmetry on each blanket (some may
have more than one).
-
Working in pairs have students design a blanket design
with pattern blocks.
-
Have students determine the line of symmetry.
-
Introduce the software Shape
Up.
-
Have students make a design for a blanket using warm
or cool colors and with a line of symmetry.
-
Print each student's work.
