Duration of Lesson: 2 classes (30 minutes)
Materials:

3 plastic straws
-
yarn (several colors), total needed: 4 yards

scissors
-
ruler

multimedia computer with Internet access

PowerPoint

Teacher Notes:
-
It is always easier to help students with a project when
you have tried it yourself first.
Procedures:
-
Look at the PowerPoint presentation
of straw weaving together and discuss why weaving was important to Native
Americans.

Follow the preparation directions on the
PowerPoint
presentation together as a class or allow students to work independently
on the project.
Modifications:
-
Allow students to partner together and assist each
other. Often an extra pair of hands will make all the difference.

Students could weave with paper to experience the process
on a simplified scale.
Enrichment Activities:
-
Students can add feathers and beads to enhance the
final project.
