Pix or another drawing software that represents his/her family.

the totem pole and how it pertains to his/her family
Duration of Lesson: 2 days (30 – 45 minutes) plus
individual time scheduled for Kid Pix

Procedures:

Look at several pictures of totem poles on The
Totem Pole Search and have students describe what they see.
-
Point out that characters/animals were chosen because of
certain characteristics or attributes they possess.
-
Lead a discussion on myths/truths about totem poles.
-
Brainstorm a list of animals third grade students might want
to use if they were creating a totem pole that represents their family.
-
Demonstrate assigning characteristics to each animal such
as bravery, creativity, cleverness, etc.
-
Read together the Art Suggestions
for Creating Totem Poles on Kid Pix posted near the computer and answer
questions.

Provide students an opportunity to create a totem pole on
Kid
Pix with animals that have characteristics of their family

Allow students to print and show their totem poles to the
class, discussing the animals they used and how it pertains to their family
Modifications:

Allow students that are inexperienced or having trouble with
Kid
Pix, to work with a partner.

Use crayons/paper as an alternative
Enrichment Activities:

Students could include their totem poles on a slide show
on Kid Pix.

Students could create a totem
pole on the Internet

Students may write a descriptive paragraph to be displayed
in the classroom next to their artwork
