Procedures:
Day 1:
1. Explain to students what sales tax is, how it is used, and why
they are
charged tax when they purchase something.
2. Practice finding the sales tax for a specific amount using the
sales tax chart.
3. The teacher will demonstrate how to figure sales tax using an overhead
calculator. After several step by step examples allow the students
to figure
sales tax on a given amount using a calculator then checking it against
the chart.
4. The students will compute the sales tax fun sheet.
Day 2:
1. Review how to find sales tax using the Sales Tax Chart and a calculator.
2. Divide the students into groups of four. Have one
group working on the
computer while the other groups participate in the activity. In the activity,
two students will be cashiers and two will be customers. The students may
purchase items made from magazine pictures, pictures the students have
drawn, or use the menus from the previous lesson. The cashier will figure
the amount of sales tax due, by using a calculator or the sales tax chart,
on
the purchase made. Rotate a group of four onto the computer to use
aaamath.com
to figure sales tax.
3. Have students take turns purchasing items, calculating the subtotal
and adding
sales tax.
Modifications:
Special needs students will be paired with another student to enable success.
If there is an adequate number of computers, all students may be involved
in
working on the computer at the same time.
Enrichment Activities:
Enrichment Center: Provide
books dealing with money.
Have the students find the sales tax rate for other states.
