Title:  $5.00 Is Not Enough?

Grade Level:  Grades 3-5

Learner Outcomes:

         The Student will be able to:

       Read a sales tax chart.

       Figure the sales tax on a given amount using a calculator.

       Understand that not all states have the same sales tax percentage.

Duration Of Lesson: 2 - 3 days (40 - 45 minute session)

Materials:

  Sales Tax Chart for each student

  Calculators for each student

  Sales tax fun sheet for each student

  Overhead calculator   Which may be purchased through enasco.com ( Item # TB18659T)

  Magazines and/or pictures of items the students would want to purchase

  Paper and pencils for each student

Technology Tools/Courseware:

         Computer with internet access
         Overhead projector
         Calculators
         Overhead calculator
         AAAmath.com

Teacher Notes:

    An "Acceptable Use Policy Form" signed for every student (If applicable)
    Each student needs a copy of the Sales Tax Chart  and Fun Sheet
     If you are using Netscape, the "return to lesson button" on Word documents may not
       function. To return to the lesson close the document.
 

Procedures:

       Day 1:

        1.  Explain to students what sales tax is, how it is used, and why they are
                charged tax when they purchase something.

        2.  Practice finding the sales tax for a specific amount using the sales tax chart.

        3. The teacher will demonstrate how to figure sales tax using an overhead
                calculator.  After several  step by step examples allow the students to figure
                sales tax on a given amount using a calculator then checking it against the chart.

        4. The students will compute the sales tax fun sheet.

      Day 2:

        1.  Review how to find sales tax using the Sales Tax Chart and a calculator.

        2.   Divide the students into groups of four.  Have one group working on the
                 computer while the other groups participate in the activity. In the activity,
                 two students will be cashiers and two will be customers. The students may
                 purchase items made from magazine pictures, pictures the students have
                 drawn, or use the menus from the previous lesson. The cashier will figure
                 the amount of sales tax due, by using a calculator or the sales tax chart, on
                 the purchase made. Rotate a group of four onto the computer to use
                     aaamath.com to figure sales tax.

        3.  Have students take turns purchasing items, calculating the subtotal and adding
                sales tax.
 

Modifications:

         Special needs students will be paired with another student to enable success.
         If there is an adequate number of computers, all students may be involved in
           working on the computer at the same time.

Enrichment Activities:

     Enrichment Center:  Provide books dealing with money.
                                  Have the students find the sales tax rate for other states.
