Lesson 5

Title:    DON'T LET IT BOUNCE!
 

Grade Level:  Grades 3-5

Subjects: Math, Language Arts, Vocational Skills

Learner Outcomes:

       The Student will be able to:

        Discuss the use of check writing.

        Write a check correctly.
 

Duration of Lesson:  2 - 3 days. (40 - 45 minutes daily)

Materials:

           Blank Checks
         Rules for Writing Checks
           Paper and pencil for each student

Technology Tools/Courseware:

           Computer with internet access
         Funbrain.com (Writing Checks-Numbers-Cookie Dough).

Teacher Notes:

     An "Acceptable Use Policy" form signed for every student. ( If applicable)

     Make copies of  blank checks and rules for writing checks for each child

    If you are using Netscape, the "return to lesson button" on Word documents may not
       function. To return to the lesson close the document.

 Procedures:

        Day 1:

         1.  Discuss with students why people write checks and when should
                  someone write a check instead of paying with cash.

         2.  Review writing numbers in word form.

         3.  Show students how to write cents on a check.  This may be done
                  on the board or on an overhead.

         4.  As a group, show students how to log on to Funbrain.com to get to
                 Cookie Dough.  You may want to demonstrate a lesson with them.

         5.  Allow 2 - 4 students to practice using Cookie Dough while others are
                 practicing writing in word form.  Remind students about the hyphen that
                 is used when writing in word form.

        Day 2:

         1.  Review writing numbers in word form.

         2.  Demonstrate how a check should be written completely.  Go over date,
                 who it is to, writing the amount in standard and word form, and signing
                 the check.

         3.  Allow students to practice writing checks.

         4.  Students may also continue practicing using Cookie Dough.

         Day 3:

         1.  Review the proper way to write a check (Refer to
                 "Rules for Writing Checks").

         2.  Using the students' budgets, have them write checks to pay their bills.

         3.  Discuss why this is a safe way to pay bills.

         4.  Discuss why or why not a person would pay all of their bills at once.
 
 

Modifications;

        Special needs students will be paired with another student to enable success.
