Civil War Experiences
The Power of a Picture

Learner Outcomes:

·  Students will learn the significance the photograph placed in the Civil War

·  The student will be able to identify a famous photographer during the Civil War

Duration of Lesson:

4 class periods (45 minute period)

Materials:

Pinhole Camera Instructions

Technology Tools/Courseware:

computer with speakers
LCD projector

Teacher Notes:

Research historical information on Matthew Brady
Make a pinhole camera for demonstration

Procedures:

Day one:

·         PowerPoint presentation

·         As a class project, write a summary of what contributions of Matthew Brady

Day two:

·         Review the PowerPoint presentation from day one.

·         Have students to access Internet for pinhole camera or make copies from How to Make and Use a Pinhole Camera

·         Follow instructions for making a pinhole camera

Day three

·         Discuss with class the use of the camera during the Civil War

·         Demonstrate how to use the pinhole camera.


Assign students to take a photo using a similar style that Matthew Brady used. See instruction sheet

·         Introduce the Photo Taking Tips

Day four

·         Students will bring in film

·         Film to be processed according to How to Make and Use a Pinhole Camera instructions

Modifications:

·  Teacher will review Individualized Evaluation Plans for necessary students.

·  Cooperative learning groups may be utilized.
