Provide assistance to children with special needs or lower developmental
skills
-
Familiarize self with students' abilities and weaknesses prior to lesson
-
See emergency forms for detailed list of procedures and information on
students
-
Teachers and assistants should make sure that students do not put toothbrushes
in their mouths - teach them about not sharing germs (Glitter
Germs Lesson)
-
It is suggested that on the fifth lesson kindergarten will pair with a
5th grade class to enrich learning and review in areas of dental hygiene.
The students will only meet during the last lesson when they will pair
with a kindergarten student to do the Dental Care Quiz and Fruit Kabob
activity. (See lesson 5 for details)
Procedures:
Kindergarten:
-
Introduction - Stimulating discussion with thought
provoking questions while in a large group; this can be a baseline of what
they know and understand before the unit. Ask questions about the
importance of our teeth. Ask what things are good for teeth and what
things are bad. Ask what students think will happen to their teeth
if they do not brush them. Finally, ask the children how they can
keep their teeth in good shape. Record their answers as if you were
conducting an interview using a tape recorder and microphone.
-
Introductory Video - After discussing their answers, show
students a short cartoon video given free from Colgate
about the importance of good dental hygiene. Follow with questions
about how their earlier thoughts may have changed. Review some of
the important points. (Book can be substituted or used in addition
to the video during this introductory lesson.)
-
Short Group Exploration Tables - Split the class into
two groups. One group will be at the computer watching more dental
hygiene procedures from BrainPop and Colgate. The other group will
be at a table exploring different types of toothbrushes, tooth pastes,
dental floss, x-rays and teeth molds donated from a dentist or orthodontist.
(Make sure that students do not put toothbrushes in their mouths. At this
time you can teach about germs and how we must not share some things with
friends - health integrated lesson). After 10 - 15 minutes switch groups.
Fifth
Grade Only:
-
It is assumed that students have experience with Power Point skills.
The following is a tutorial for power point on an upper grade elementary
level if needed: Power Point
teaching Unit
-
Group students to work on the presentations and discuss expectations.
Students are to use simple graphics with simple picture book text to create
interactive slides where students can make a choice between a positive
dental health choice and a negative choice. Pass out and discuss
Kathy
Schrock's Power Point Rubric at this time as it will be use for the
evaluation in Lesson 5.
-
Give definite due date for presentation after consulting with kindergarten
teacher to determine the date of the fifth lesson. The students will work
with kindergartners in the lab when taking the Dental Care Quiz.
Modifications:
-
Students with visual impairments will sit within close proximation to the
TV.
-
Additional time is given to a student who has delays in cognition or motor
processing and/or coordination.
-
Pair typically developing students with developmentally delayed students
to facilitate appropriate peer modeling.
Enrichment
Activities:
-
Utilize the Web for games that require thinking skills instead of just
watching an on-line demonstration
-
Higher expectations may be included for those developing at above age appropriate
skill levels
-
Lesson on Germs - Glitter
Germs Lesson
Evaluation
/Assessment:
-
Complete anecdotal records, observation notes, and/or rubric
-
Teacher or trained assistant will document progress from the goals listed
in standard benchmarks by stating child's name, date, and skill achieved.
Mastered criteria includes any skill that has been performed correctly
and independently with 90% accuracy. At this time the teacher or
assistant can write any other observations in anecdotal format. (It is
beneficial to utilize Avery 7 mailing labels but any other note taking
device would be sufficient.)
-
Fifth grade will be assessed at completion of presentation assignment by
the Kathy Schrock
Power Point
