Science
Learner Outcomes:
  1. Students will continue to learn the importance of dental hygiene.
  2. Students will learn how to keep plaque and decay from teeth.
  3. Students will learn to brush their teeth appropriately.
  4. Students will learn that brushing makes teeth clean and white.
  5. Students will discover different types of toothbrushes and tooth pastes.

Duration of Lesson:
15-20  minutes per group activity (2 groups); (if children are actively involved, minutes can be added) (Approximately 45-60 minutes total)
Materials:
Large Manila tooth cutouts (use scissors and construction paper or card stock), easels, toothbrushes, smocks, white paint or mixture of paint, glue, and glitter, hard boiled eggs that were used the day before for the science experiment, documentation labels and/or anecdotal records (rubric)
Technology Tools / Courseware:
Digital camera/film, and floppy disc, cassette tape recorder and microphone
Teacher Notes:
  1. Complete Current AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) per student
  2. Utilize Boardmaker to obtain Diagram of Tooth
  3. Provide assistance to those children with special needs or lower developmental skills
  4. Familiarize self with students' abilities and weaknesses prior to lesson

Procedures:

  1. Introduction - Introduce lesson by stimulating thought provoking questions while in a large group.  Ask them questions concerning the results of the science project like: " What happened to the egg and why?".  Record their answers as if you were interviewing them; use a tape recorder and microphone.  Compare the results of the science experiment from the previous lesson (the egg in the soda pop) to candy and foods that create tooth decay and plaque by relating it to the monsters that attack your teeth.  Remind them that this was shown in the animation of Dr. Rabbit presented by Colgate from the previous lesson.   Next, tell them the relevance of this and the reasons why it is important to brush teeth regularly and correctly
  1. Activity #1 and #2
  1. Computer Activity - Students will play a game on the computer about tooth brushing Colgate Toothbrush Patch

Modifications:

  1. Additional time should be given to students who have delays in cognition or motor processing and/or coordination.
  2. Pair typically developing students with developmentally delayed students to promote appropriate peer modeling (cooperation is increased, thus constructive techniques are implemented).

Enrichment Activities:

  1. Utilize the web with a computer and Internet access to additional games on teeth see Colgate site.
  2. Have the children brush their own teeth while taking pictures of their participation.
  3. Higher expectations may be included for those developing at above average age appropriate skill development.

Evaluation / Assessment:

  1. Complete anecdotal records, observation notes, and/or rubric.
  2. Teacher or trained assistant will document progress from the goals listed in standard benchmarks by stating child's name, date, and skill achieved.  Mastered criteria includes any skill that has been performed correctly and independently with 90% accuracy.  At this time the teacher or assistant can write any other observations in anecdotal format. (It has been our advantage to utilize Avery 7 Mailing Labels but any other note taking device would be sufficient).
