  1. Students will demonstrate the understanding of dental hygiene by generalizing what they have learned to a healthy choice activity.
  2. Students will use appropriate basic computer skills by completing a Power Point lesson presented and taught by the 5th grade.
  3. Students will use appropriate cooperative learning skills while working with other peers and with the 5th grade.

    Fifth Grade:

  5. Kindergarten students will work with fifth grade partners to complete Presentation Dental Health Quiz prepared by the Fifth Graders.
  6. Kindergarten and fifth grade students will make Fruit Kabob Creations from healthy foods

Duration of Lesson:
10 minutes if a computer lab is available
20 minutes for Tasting Party
Materials:
Documentation labels and/or anecdotal records (rubric),  Power Point Presentation
Technology Tools / Courseware:
Power Point Presentation created by 5th Graders, digital camera, film/floppy disc, computer lab
Teacher Notes:
  1. Complete Current AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) per student
  2. Provide assistance to children with special needs or lower developmental skills
  3. Familiarize self with students' abilities and weaknesses prior to lesson
  4. Teacher collaborates with 5th grade class and teacher prior to lesson
  5. Have Power Point Dental Health Quiz loaded on computer in advance
  6. Acquire fruit samples for Fruit Kabob Activity in advance
  7. Children will meet 5th grade students prior to lesson to establish appropriate rapport
  8. The 5th grade would have ample time to prepare a Power Point lesson for the preschool and/or kindergarten
  9. class prior to this lesson (See Lesson One)
Procedures:
  1. Introduction -  The 5th Grade students  will introduce themselves and the lesson prior to transitioning to the computer lab.
  1. Instructions -  The upper class group will instruct the students to pair off with assigned students and teachers in the computer lab.
  1. Activity -  There should be 1-2 preschool/kindergarten students per 1-2 upper class students.  These upper class students will individually explain the instructions of their power point game by providing them with simple one to two step instructions depending on the abilities of the students (See Lesson One).
Modifications:
  1. Students with developmental delays will be paired with typically developing peers.
  2. Students with physical delays may require adaptive technology for the computer (i.e. Touch Screen)
  3. Students will cognitive delays and receptive language delays will need additional time to process questions; ample time should be given before a response is expected
Enrichment Activities:
  1. Utilize the Web for games that require thinking skills instead of just watching a demonstration on line
  2. Higher Expectations may be included for those developing at above age appropriate skills levels
Evaluation / Assessment:
  1. Complete anecdotal records, observation notes, and/or rubric
  2. Teacher or trained assistant will document progress from the goals listed in standard benchmarks by stating child's name, date, and skill achieved.  Mastered criteria includes any skill that has been performed correctly and independently with 90% accuracy.  At this time the teacher or assistant can write any other observations in anecdotal format. (It is helpful to utilize Avery 7 mailing labels but any other note taking device would be sufficient).
