Hold On, Humpty Dumpty

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Subjects: Language Arts, Art, Music, Health, Science, and Technology

Learner Outcomes:
The student will recite the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty independently.
The student will be able to tell safety rules for climbing.
The student will participate in simple egg science experiments.
The student will make and put together a simple puzzle.
The student will lace a pre cut Humpty Dumpty independently.

Duration of Lesson: 2-3 days (15-20 minutes per day)

Materials:
Chart paper
egg shells
colored plastic eggs, (optional)
yarn, hole punch
Science Experiment (see link for materials).

Technology Tools/Courseware:
Computers
Internet access
basic paint program
colored printer
CD/Tape Player with headphones
Acceptable Use Policy signed and on file

Teacher Notes:
Prepare the Humpty Dumpty lacing card by duplicating it onto card stock paper.
Punch the holes and cut your yarn allowing a little extra.
Tape one end on the back of the card and put a piece of tape around the other end
so that it will not  fray as they sew. (this eliminates the need for yarn needles and
allows the yarn to be taken out as often as needed.)
Collect the items needed for the simple science experiment, you may wish to do this in
small groups so that each child can participate in the discussion as well as the process.
Duplicate the puzzle paper and give out as an arrival activity one morning or
     as an independent station.

Center ideas:
Place clean broken shells in a shallow tray and let the children try to piece them
    back together.
Take plastic eggs (found during Easter) and mix and match them to create a pattern
for the children to duplicate using similar eggs.
Ask the children to see how many different kinds of wall they can built in the block
center. Demonstrate offset placement of blocks for strength of wall versus towers
    side by side.)
Use the puzzle as a independent activity.
On the computer the children can, with help, access online The Little Explorer and
view pictures of oviparous (animals that hatch from eggs) and sites dealing
with eggs. Check this out! "Egg"cited About Eggs

Procedures:
Day 1 - Begin by reciting the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty. Repeat several times so the children can recite it along with you. Allow the children time to give their ideas about why Humpty Dumpty was sitting on the wall. (Stress there are no right or wrong answers.) This rhyme is good to open a discussion about safety and the reason there are safety rules on the playground about climbing. Brain storm some safety rules and write them on chart paper to be displayed in the classroom. This can even lead into a discussion about using 911 and other safety issues.
Some key questions could be: What do you think happened to Humpty Dumpty when he fell? Why couldn't the King's Men put him back together? What might happen if you fell from a wall? Who would help make you better? Has anyone ever had a broken bone?

Day 2 - As an early arrival or an opening activity have children lace the Humpty Dumpty. Recite Humpty Dumpty with the children. Review the safety rules from the day before. Divide a large sheet of chart paper in half. On one half have the children give you examples of things they would/could do that would result in something else happening. On the other side list what would be the effect of the things in the first half. Ex: Under cause you could have "not wearing a bike helmet" - Effect would be "getting hurt if you have an accident."

Day 3 - You need set up the science experiments and allow the children time to discuss what they are about to see. Make a prediction chart with each child's response to the experiments. As the children complete both experiments have them go to the computer and pull up a paint program and draw pictures of Humpty Dumpy and print out their pictures.

Modifications:
Brainstorming ideas as a group and working with a partner should eliminate a need for modifications other than those specified in their IEP's.

Enrichment Activities:
Humpty Dumpty can be used to develop a whole unit on eggs. Children can explore the many ways eggs can be eaten by asking parents to send in food prepared with eggs. (Check children for food allergies). Explore all the different animals that are hatched from eggs. Compare the different sizes of eggs with the animals that hatches from the egg.

Evaluation/Assessment:
Oral responses during class discussions, class participation, and ability to recall class rules established during the first activity. Grading Rubric
