Lesson 1-Brushing Away Acid Monsters

Learner Outcomes

The student will:

  • identify proper cleaning procedures for teeth
  • watch video and participate in discussion about topics discussed in video
  • maintain daily calendar of teeth brushing
Duration of Lesson: 40 minutes

Materials:

Technology Tools: TV, VCR, Computer, Projection Device

Teacher Notes:

  • Obtain teeth molds prior to Lesson 1.
  • Obtain toothbrushes (one for each student for later use and one for each cooperative group).
  • Order video from Colgate {use link to "The Incredible Ride", click on Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures, then click on teacher link}.
  • Preview video prior to showing the students.
  • Preview PowerPoint presentation
  • Possess basic knowledge of showing PowerPoint presentations
Procedures:

1. Introduce Dental Health Unit with video, "The Incredible Ride."
2. Lead student discussion about video. Questions might include:

  • How would you feel if you met Dr. Rabbit?
  • What questions would you ask Dr. Rabbit?
  • What safety devices are used on amusement rides?
  • How would you feel if your best friend got lost on a ride?
  • What would you do?
  • What are the Acid Monsters doing?
  • Why was the plaque giggling?
  • What did you learn about caring for your teeth?
3. Give directions regarding proper handling of teeth molds/models.
4. Demonstrate proper brushing techniques with model.
5. Give each group a model and a toothbrush. Allow each student to take a turn brushing, verbalizing the proper procedures while other students in the group "coach."
6. Pass out the calendar for use with teeth brushing. Discuss how to mark morning and afternoon brushing. Calendars will be collected at the end of the unit.
7. Use Projection Device to show students teacher-made PowerPoint presentation.
8. Closure activity: allow students to "Think, Pair, Share." Each person will tell partner something that was learned from the video or type in Microsoft Word.

Modifications:

  • Repeat and restate directions, as needed.
  • Modify as indicated on individual student's IEPs or 504 plans.
  • Cooperative groups should be heterogeneous.
Enrichment:
  • Draw a picture of event from video or paint in Microsoft Windows.
  • Retell story from video from different point of view.
  • Visit Library Corner and read a book related to Dental Health unit.
