Lesson 3-Healthy Foods

Learner Outcomes

The student will:

  • read/discuss 32-page storybook about oral health
  • view LCD Projection of healthy foods
  • learn what foods/servings are incorporated in a healthy diet
  • measurement of cardboard to display 4 basic food groups
  • cut out pictures of foods included in 4 basic food groups
  • maintain daily calendar of teeth brushing
Duration of Lesson: 40 minutes

Materials:

  • Book, So Who's Dr. Rabbit (obtain from Colgate-Palmolive)
  • TV, LCD projector
  • Various magazines for cutting pictures
  • scissors/glue
  • poster board
  • toothbrushes/toothpaste
Technology Tools/Courseware: TV/LCD Projection, Internet access

Teacher Notes:

Procedures:
  1. Show students teacher-created PowerPoint Presentation.
  2. Read/Discuss book, So Who's Dr. Rabbit?, show pictures.
  3. Students are challenged to create a play about oral health.
  4. Discussion of feelings of pride in learning new things and creating something of their own.
  5. View ada.org. information on healthy foods.
  6. View dupagehealth.org on healthy snacks.
  7. Write on board a list of foods consumed the previous day for 2 students.  Evaluate how many servings of the 4 basic food groups they consumed.
  8. Discuss cooperative learning techniques to use when cutting pictures.
  9. Help students plan, organize poster for displaying basic food groups.
  10. Pass out the calendar for use with teeth brushing.
  11. Calendars will be collected at the end of the two week unit.
Modifications

Notify as indicated on individual students' IEP and 504 plans.
Heterogeneous Cooperative groups

Enrichment Activities: Create additional endings to the play the students create

Students will perform their created play and submit copy of written draft
