Procedures:
1. Discuss
with students the different kinds of toothpaste, their flavors, ingredients,
kinds of toothpastes used by students.
2.Prepare
students to conduct survey. Provide them with the prepared survey
questions. Allow them time to practice within small groups.
3. Guide
students to display the information from the survey on the graph. This
can be done individually or in cooperative groups. Students may also use
graphing software to make graph of survey results.
4. Students
will discuss ingredients needed to make different types of foods ( pizza,
tacos, etc.). Show students the ingredient
list for different toothpastes. Allow them to brainstorm and be creative
with new ingredients for toothpaste.
5. Allow
each cooperative group to write a recipe for the new toothpaste in Microsoft
Word and insert Clipart.
6. Students
will then create a poster
to advertise the new toothpaste.
7. Brainstorm
with students the benefits of practicing good dental hygiene habits. Review
the writing process. Give the students time to write a
persuasive paragraph about good dental hygiene practices. This would
include a rough draft, editing, and the final draft. Once the final draft
is complete, students may use word processing program to write the paragraph.
They may add clip art and display their final copies.
8. Allow
students to visit the Internet sites
pertaining to dental health. Use the projection device and visit the
Healthy teeth site.
9. Show students the teacher-created
PowerPoint presentation.

Follow modifications
on individual student's IEP or 504 plans.

Allow for
heterogeneous groupings in cooperative groups.

Provide
visuals and frequently spelled words for the writing activity.
Enrichment:
-
Students
may bring needed items for the recipe for new toothpaste and make them
for each other.

may design a new toothbrush.

may individually visit Dental Health web
sites and complete activities.

Students
may develop and present a PowerPoint presentation concerning dental practices.
