Grade level: 3-5
Subjects: Language Arts, Math
Learner Outcomes:
1. The learners
will read and discuss the story Charlotte's Web.
2. The learner
will use a dictionary to find guide words and definitions for the vocabulary
words.
3. The learner
will work on point of view, setting, characters, problems, solutions, character
traits, and writing a summary.
Duration of lesson: 50 minutes daily for about 2 weeks
Materials: the book, Charlotte's Web, for each child; dictionaries, reading journal/folder, vocabulary list for each chapter
Technology Tools/Courseware: Multimedia computer
Teacher Notes: Remind children to be careful when handling spiders. There are some very good web sites that have free worksheets and activities for Charlotte's Web.
Procedures:
1. Vocabulary
development - Develop a list of vocabulary
words for chapters 1-4. Write the list on chart paper, leaving
them in the order that they come in the book. Go over the list of
words. Type the words on the computer, giving the students a list
to paste onto a page in their journals. The teacher will read the
first chapter of the story aloud to the class. When the first word
on the vocabulary list comes up, have the children write the sentence from
the story in their journals. Continue reading Chapter 1 making the
students responsible for finding the next vocabulary words and writing
them in their journals. Assign chapters 2, 3, and 4 to be read at
home. The children will need to write the sentences from the story
that go with the vocabulary word list.
2. Sometime during the
lesson the children will probably be curious as to what the symbols mean
at the beginning of the chapters. Introduce
and/or review the Roman numerals with the class since the chapters are
numbered that way. Discuss where they might have seen Roman Numerals
(Great grandma's clock). Show how the numbers are named and what
they stand for.
3. Discuss the
reading assignment. Introduce the vocabulary for the next reading
assignment. Give reading assignment as homework. In student's
journal, write a summary for the chapters read as homework.
4. Repeat procedures
1 and 3 until the book is completed at a pace that is suitable for the
class. Any of the enrichment activities can be used to supplement
the reading of the story.
Modifications: Read the story to children with lower reading levels. An audio tape could also be used.
Enrichment Activities:
1. Complete activities
on Roman
Numerals from the web site.
2. Find the guide
words for all or some of the vocabulary words.
3. Find point of
view, setting, characters, problems, solutions, character traits, and writing
a summary for the chapter you are reading.
4. Write a dictionary
definition for some of the vocabulary words.
Evaluation/Assessment: completion of the vocabulary word list's sentences, journal entries, and any of the activities that are assigned
