WEATHER IN A BOX ACTIVITY

MATERIALS:
For each group:
Large clear plastic rectangular container with lid
Small clear plastic container (shallow)
Exacto knife
Silicon sealer or waterproof glue
Plaster of paris and container for mixing
Tempera paint
Lamp (small – like a desk lamp)
Ice
Warm water
PROCEDURES:
1. Mix the plaster of paris according to directions.
2. Form the landscape(mountains and rivers) in the bottom of the large container, covering about 2\3 of it.  (The remaining area of the bottom will be the lake area.)
3. Allow to dry overnight.  Paint the landscape as desired.
4. Cut a 2” x 2” hole in the lid of the large container – about 4-5 inches from one end.  Glue the small container to the bottom of the lid, covering the hole.  This is the cooling chamber (cloud container) that will hold the ice.
5. Set the box on a flat surface.  Fill the lake end of the box with about an inch of warm water and put the lid on the box.  Fill the cloud container with ice. Place the lamp over the “lake” end of the box to heat the water.  Turn on the lamp.  The light will heat the warm water.  Observe and record observations.  (This will take about 30 minutes.)
6.  Each group will present their findings and the class will then discuss and compare observations.
7. Each student will write a summary of the activity.
