Activity 1: Make a Scale
Model
1. Each student will bring, or select from teacher
collection, a comic character or other picture to
reproduce.
2. Using worksheet Scale
Drawing Project, a sheet of graph paper, and a ruler, each student
will
trace a grid of 1 cm squares over
the picture. (Start in the center of the picture and work toward
the edges. Use a protractor or right
angle to make squares).
3. Using a sheet of graph paper with 1 inch squares,
students will reproduce the cartoon charcter
and other main objects in the picture
on the larger scale graph paper. (1cm = 1 inch). Make
sure that what is in each square on
the centimeter graph is in the corresponding square of the
inch paper. Is the finished
product proportional to the original in length, width, and height?
4. When cartoons are finished, students will trade drawings
with a partner and measure to
determine if the scale has been accurately
applied. The artist will put his/her name and class
period on the back, upper right of
your drawing; the name of the person who rated your work
and his/her rating and reasoning below
your name.
5. After completing the drawing and having it peer
reviewed students will write a summary of what
he/she learned about making
a scale drawing and any tips that will help him/her to improve their
next scale drawing. Included in discussion
should be:
-
definitions of ratio/ proportion, scaling,
and similarity of figures and
corresponding parts.
6. Cartoon drawings are to be mounted on a sheet of colored
paper and given to the teacher to be
displayed.
7. Assessment will be evaluation of the cartoon product
and of the summary paragraph based on a
rubric.
