1.  Students will estimate the distance to their homes from school and other distances common to students in the class, Worksheet #1.  For unknown distances, or those which are not agreed upon by students, students should be encouraged to discuss reasons for their estimates, bringing out the time it takes to get to a place, the site's location as compared to another known distance, etc.

2.  Using paper and online maps such as Mapquest, students will apply the scale to determine the actual mileage between points and check their estimates.

3.  Students will work individually to complete the attached worksheet, then discuss responses with their group, and finally, will have an opportunity to share ideas with the class.
