1.Students will access How Big is Blue? and will work in groups of 4 - 6 to depict the size of a whale. This will be done by having students position themselves at distances equal to the size of a particular whale (from their research in math, science, and english).
2. Next, students will download
pictures of whales to measure dimensions, then apply a scale
factor to determine
life size measurements of the whales.
2. Groups (4 - 6) of students
will produce a scale model of a selected whale that is
approximately
four foot long with
proportional dimensions.
3. Next, groups will apply
ratio/ proportion and their knowledge of scale modeling to create a
life
sized pattern of the
whale. (Project Wild produces an activity book with patterns for
student
projects).
4. The four foot long model of a
whale will be evaluated using a Scale Modeling rubric.
Additionally, students
are to write a summary of their experiences with whales including
concepts they've
learned, what real-life applications their learning might affect, and their
views
of the methods of
learning used in this lesson.
** An extension of this lesson is to create the life sized whale according to students' scale models of the component parts of the whale.
