The student will identify characteristics of the music of
the jazz era.

The student will develop criteria for selecting personal
music based on increased listening activities.

The student will be able to identify jazz musicians who performed
in the twenties and recognize their music.

The student will be able to identify art styles of the period.
Duration of Lesson: Two 45 minute class periods

Teacher Notes:
Students should be familiar with the use of a computer and how to explore
the internet.
The activity sheet What Made the Jazz Age
Jazzy? should be copied and distributed to the
students.
Procedure:
-
The teacher will present the lesson on the culture of the
1920's using the Power Point Presentation.

The teacher will provide a class listening activity with
listening examples of music of the musicians in the Power Point presentation.

The students will be divided into groups according to the
number of computers available and complete the activity sheet.

The teacher will instruct the students to explore the site,
Flapper Culture
and Style, using the scroll bar at the right.

Activity sheets will be distributed to the students Class
discussion will be held on questions.
Modifications:
-
Hearing impaired students will be seated near speakers during
any listening activity- most severely impaired will be given balloons to
hold on speakers.

Visually impaired students work will be printed on blue paper
and enlarged.

Study groups will be evenly assigned according to ability
level.
Enrichment Activities:
-
Additional listening selections will be available for students
in listening stations.
Students will be given a list of additional web sites
to visit on the 1920's culture
Evaluation/ Assessment:
-
The will grade activity sheets of the students and will look
for clarity of information and depth of understanding.

A unit test will be given which includes listening and artworks
identification.
