Title:  Beyond the Scope 

Grade Levels:  9-12

Subjects:  Social Studies, Language Arts, Study Skills

Learner Outcomes:  Students will be able to:
                                    access information on the Internet
                                    take notes from the Internet
                                    organize and sequence notes
                                    prepare a 5 - paragraph theme on a specific topic
                                    make an argument for the side they don't favor
                                    have a thorough understanding of the Scopes Trial

Duration of Lesson:  2 to 4 - 45 minute periods

Materials: Student notebooks

Technology/ Tools:  Computers with Internet access

Teacher notes:  Teacher must reserve the computer lab in advance.

Procedures:   Students will visit at least three Web sites, gathering information on the Scopes Trial.  Notes from the
                       Internet will be kept in student notebooks.  Students should not be allowed to download material.
                       When the teacher feels enough information has been gathered, students should report to the class room.
                        Students will be asked which side they favor.  After making their decision, students will be told that
                       they are to write a five paragraph theme defending the OPPOSITE side.  In their theme they should
                       include changes they would make in the prosecution or defense.  The computer lab should be used for
                       the writing of the papers.

Modifications:   Some special needs students may require more time.  Please check IEPs.

Enrichment Activities: Students may prepare and give a speech  on closing arguments for their side.

Evaluation/Assessment:  The five paragraph theme will be an evaluation.  Grades should reflect historical accuracy
                                           and creative thinking as well as organization, fluency and grammar.
