Lesson One: THE NET

The student will demonstrate the technological skills necessary to use the Internet to access information.
 

Time Frame:

2-3 class periods
 

Materials:

Computer with Internet access, presentation device (LCD panel, TView, or multimedia projector), Powerpoint lesson, activity worksheets, and evaluation tools.
 

Technology Tools/Courseware: Internet and Powerpoint

Teacher Notes:

• The instructor must be computer literate and Internet trained. A good review site is www.learnthenet.com.
• The student must be in compliance with the LEA's Acceptable Use Policy and Consent/Waiver Form http://wvde.state.wv.us/policies/p2460.htm.

Procedures:

1. The student will be introduced to the Internet through a Powerpoint presentation entitled "Surf's Up", or an alternate approach.

2. The student will conduct an online tutorial at www.learnthenet.com. Use the "Getting Started" location to identify components of the computer and Internet (including computer parts and function, history of the Net, safe use and netiquette)
3. Investigate the "LearntheNet" site for knowledge and understanding of how to use the toolbars and to become familiar with relevant terms used to navigate within the browser. Use the attached Activity 1, "The Net" glossary worksheet, to define terms. As enrichment, students may create a word search puzzle located at www.puzzlemaker.com
4. The student will conduct an online search using www.yahoo.com. Use the attached Activity 2, "The Net" scavenger hunt, to complete this exercise. After an introduction and practice hunt led by the teacher, the student will follow the written directions to retrieve the information.
5. The student will apply knowledge of Internet tools to all curricular areas to conduct research, explore occupations in various career families, prepare written assignments, and complete projects. Integrated lessons in two or more subject areas will incorporate information and skills learned.

Modifications:

Appropriate for all students in all subject areas.

Lesson may need to be modified according to the student's I.E.P.

ACTIVITY 1: GLOSSARY SEARCH OF INTERNET TERMS

1. Begin your search by typing www.learnthenet.com in the URL box and enter.
2. Click on Getting Started.
3. Read the Getting Started screen for a good review of Internet terms.
4. At the bottom of the screen, you will see the Internet Toolbar displayed.

** Teacher should review the toolbar functions before students continue**

1. On the side menu, click on Glossary.
2. You will see a long list of glossary terms.
3. Choose the words listed below from that list and click on each one to see a detailed description of the term.
4. Match the terms with the correct definition.

Follow these instructions to do a PRACTICE scavenger hunt:

Access www.yahoo.com and click on Sports. You will see a list of sports. Click on Athletes. Click on Basketball. Click on NBA. You will see a list of players. Scroll down and click on Michael Jordan. You will see a long list of Michael Jordan web sites. Scroll down to the Michael Jordan homepage. Click on his homepage.

• The objective for a scavenger hunt is to have the student follow a set of directions and retrieve information when the final destination is reached.
• The broader purpose is to learn to use the Internet through "fun" practice.

HUNT 1: THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS SCAVENGER HUNT IS TO

DETERMINE THE CURRENT TEMPERATURE IN

MYRTLE BEACH, SOUTH CAROLINA.

1. Access www.yahoo.com.
2. Click on Weather. It is located just below the Yahoo search box.
3. Find the temperature in Myrtle Beach.
4. Write your answer on your own paper.

HUNT 2: THE OBJECTIVE OF SCAVENGER HUNT 2 IS TO TEACH THE STUDENT HOW TO FIND CURRENT NEWS STORIES.

1. Access www.yahoo.com.
2. Find the name of a major national newspaper.
3. List the title of today's lead story in that paper.
4. Identify the career of one person discussed in the story.
5. Write your answer on your own paper.

HUNT 3: IN SCAVENGER HUNT 3, THE STUDENT WILL FIND AND

READ A LIST OF QUESTIONS WHICH ARE ILLEGAL FOR

AN EMPLOYER TO ASK A PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYEE IN

THE INTERVIEW PROCESS.

Access www.yahoo.com. Scroll down to the bottom of the Yahoo homepage. See section titled Other. Click on Employment. Click on Advice. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen. Under interview questions, click on Illegal questions. List three examples of questions which are illegal Write your answers on your own paper.

HUNT 4: SCAVENGER HUNT 4 WILL TEACH THE STUDENT

HOW TO USE YAHOO TO FIND DIRECTIONS AND

DETERMINE MILEAGE FROM ONE DESTINATION TO

ANOTHER.

1. Access www.yahoo.com.
2. In the top section of the Yahoo screen, click on Maps.
3. A box will appear on the screen.
4. Click on Driving Directions.
5. Under Starting Address, type in your own street address or route number.
6. Under Destination Address, type in the address of your school.
7. Click on Get Directions.
8. You will see a map with the route marked from your house to your school.
9. Read the map information carefully and determine how many miles it is from your home to your school.
10. Record your answer on your own paper.
