Lesson Four: "THE CONNECTION CORNER"

Grade Level(s): 8-12

Subject(s): All

Learner Outcomes:

The student will actively participate in a team based learning process which will result in the creation of a career information center, "The Connection Corner".

Time Frame:

3 class periods with 3 weeks to complete projects

***Students will maintain and update "The Connection Corner" throughout the year.***
 

Materials:

Computer with Internet access, word processor, desktop publishing software, paper, art supplies and calculators.
 
Technology Tools/Courseware:

Computer with Internet capability, scanner, digital camera, and copier

  Teacher Notes:

* The instructor must be computer literate and Internet trained. A good review site is www.learnthenet.com.  Knowledge of word processing and desktop publishing is essential.

* The student must be in compliance with the LEA's Acceptable Use Policy and Consent/Waiver Form http://wvde.state.wv.us/policies/. Prior training on computer use and the Internet is preferable, specifically word processing and desktop publishing.

* Teachers in different subject areas will collaborate in planning, preparing, and executing this assignment.
 
 
Procedures:
The student will research, develop, and prepare materials to be used in an interdisciplinary lesson. All completed work will be displayed in a designated career information area within the school for student review.

  1. Social Studies—The student will use online newspapers to research employment ads in several local and national newspapers through www.yahoo.com or other search. Using the information obtained, he will create a help wanted ad and a situation wanted ad for an occupation of personal interest. The ad will be included in a student produced "Careers Wanted" newsletter created with appropriate software.
  2. LA—The student will use online research tools, and other reference materials, to create an overview (education, job skills/duties, salary, etc.) of a career of personal interest to be included in a student produced brochure or newsletter.
  3. Math—The student will survey his peers to determine career interests for potential exploration, field trips, and career fair participants. Each student will create and conduct a survey of a peer group (min. 10 students, 10 questions) and compile the results.
  4. Science—The student will predict jobs of the future and prepare a one page overview of that occupation. This may include descriptions, artwork, want ads, or other inventive depictions
  5. Art—The student will create, or acquire, visual representations of careers. This may include original art, photos, pictures, graphics, etc. The artwork will be used to create a collage or bulletin board on occupations.
  6. Other subjects—The student will complete an assignment related to "The Connection Corner" to be determined by the teacher.

Modifications:

Appropriate for all students in all subject areas.
The lesson may need to be modified according the student’s IEP.
 

Enrichment activities:

* The student may visit open lab to access online career sites, such as "America’s Job Bank" www.ajb.dni.us, Occupational Outlook Handbook  www.bls.gov/oco/ocoiab.htm , and "Careernet" www.career.net .

* The student may utilize the GIS system, Classroom, Inc. software simulation modules, and other career related software. He may also access a subscription service such as Wilson Online Index.

* The student will be encouraged to volunteer and /or participate in job related experiences.

Proficient use of technology tools

Satisfactory completion of all assignments and projects
